Monthly Archives: June 2023

Morning walk along the outgoing tide with Ishka.

We camped on the beach last weekend, just to get a little glimpse of our normal family working vacation. Instead of a busy, fishing oriented beach, it was oddly vacant and very quiet. An enjoyable but different camping experience for sure.

Mo and her younger kiddos set up camp and we joined them late Friday. I missed our full Fish Camp Family: Niki & boys, Ms Jane & Mr Marion, Mr “Swiss Army Knife” Jimmy, and Mr Chris. They were all in my thoughts, holding places of gratitude for their contributions to our efforts over the past nine years, the friendships developed and wishing we were all together again. Hoping that we get the chance to fish together at least once more.

Our annual Fish Camp time is about far more than just fishing. It’s Alaska Culture at its best: harvesting from the land & sea, working together, learning from others, sharing our collective knowledge and years of wisdom, and going home with pantries full of fish and hearts full of gratitude.

Even without the regular trappings of fish camp , the kids enjoyed an unhurried pace and no chores! (Other than setting up camp and tearing down.) Playing games, eating good food and just relaxing. I enjoyed all of that and the company of my good friend.

Who digs a better hole?

This was Ishka’s first outing to the beach and he did very well. No running off. No tearing things up. He did chase after a couple seagulls but we put a stop to that. He was tuckered out every night and slept very well. This dog has a tremendous amount of energy and he used it up every day!

Alaska Boy and I tried our hand at a little halibut surf fishing. We didn’t catch anything but we learned a thing or two. And we’ll give it another try some other time.

Solstice means fish in our family!

This past winter-spring I’ve been assisting a client with updates in order to sell her custom cedar log home. She went about the process systematically; hired a home inspector for a thorough inspection report, hired a licensed contractor to do major repairs, and consulted with plumbers & electricians for specialized repairs. After all initial issues were addressed she had a follow -up inspection with a couple minor issues to resolve, one of which was this vanity drain. It seems inspectors don’t care for flexi-pipe extensions.

Existing plumbing can be complicated and seemingly pointless when renovations are made. Always use the KISS* principle in tight spaces.

She invested quite a bit into maintaining and preparing her home for sale, in order to get a premium price and hopefully sell quickly. And it paid off for her!

Well, Once in a While Canning is more appropriate.

Peter Piper picked a peck of sweet red peppers and gave them to us. So we busied ourselves and pickled them. They are the sweetest peppers I think I’ve ever had.

Lil Bit spent about three hours yesterday prepping them all, culling, washing & slicing. After work I helped her pickle them. We added some jalapeno slices and a small piece of habanero pepper to each jar for a little flair along with black pepper corns, dill seed, garlic & salt. We used 2 gallons of vinegar. She ended up with 8 qts of sliced and 3 qts of whole pickled peppers. (Because Mom broke one jar! 🥴)

This was her first time canning (with just a little direction from me) and she did a great job. She figured out how to calculate her brine using a ratio on her own too. She will be able to enter these in the fair! I’m pretty proud of her.

Besides all these lovely pepper pickles, we ended up with 8 or 9 qts in the freezer. What a bounty.

I haven’t been keeping up with our canning posts tho. Our rhubarb is looking great this year. Lush and green and full of thick stalks. We should have plenty for a big batch of wine. Last week the girls both pitched in and canned up a couple of cases of strawberry rhubarb jam with Thing 1 taking lead. They made some freezer jam, some regular sugar jam and some sugar free (keto friendly) jam. So that’s two big canning sessions in June already.

I guess it’s a good thing to be processing other foods while we’re normally processing fish. It’s been really strange being home and not living on the beach for this time period. And eating up our last few jars of canned salmon. Salmon burgers for the win last night, in the midst of making a wreck out of the kitchen. 🍔
