I’ve been posting a lot of fungus among us pictures via the Shroom Cam lately. The lowly fungi have been popping after all this rain.
I especially enjoy finding new to me varieties & all of our funky amanitas.
Mushroom hunting is fun!! 🍄

Yesterday, Mark & Laquita invited us out on their boat, the Tallita II, for a day of scenic tours and tubing fun. The weather was perfect and we had a great time.

This was the kids first time going tubing. So we took it nice and easy. They had a blast. Faster, faster was the mantra of the little Mister!.
Sunshine all day.
We had some butterflies join us on the beach. They loved our brightly colored clothes.

The scenery is majestic! Pictures do not do it justice!

Being off sugar for 6+ months now my cravings for sweets has changed. And some things, like Stevia sweetened drinks, just taste too sweet and aren’t enjoyable. I pass them off to my kids who are thrilled.
I’ve found that if I have a healthy non added sugar option regularly that I don’t feel deprived. For those moments I keep a few things on hand that boost protein and have a mild sweetness. Things like Keto Pecans, zero yogurts, strawberries, blackberries, raspberries and blueberries. Also whipped cream without added sugar. Keto clusters and low carb chocolate all make great desserts.

I love these Keto Pecans. So crunchy and just barely a touch of sweetness.

Something I’ve grown to love is a zero sugar yogurt with a few berries and some pecans. For a real splurge, homemade whipped cream on top. Yes, it’s delicious.
It’s all I need to feel like I’ve had dessert! It makes it easier to opt out of sugary desserts at special occasions.

I’ll even have a keto friendly iced coffee once in a while. Homemade of course, but still delicious.
I can feel a change in energy levels if I go over on carbs almost immediately. It’s been fairly easy to stay the course since I feel so much better. I do miss the crunchy things tho. Finding suitable substitutes for chips is a big deal for me. My go-to choices are: dehydrated okra or cauliflower, cheese crisps, celery with Kenai cheese dip, no grain chips like Siete brand (but only very sparingly as they do have carbs and are pretty pricey).

All this talk about food is making me hungry. I need more coffee
Fishcamp recap.
I had a hard time getting up Monday morning. No alarm for nearly 2 weeks, naturally waking is nice! Sleeping to ocean sounds is also nice. Neither of those things are happening anymore . 😂
Although technically not fishcamp related the Solstice Sisters headed to Homer on Sunday, which has become a tradition at least once a year when things are normal. We went for brunch and tried to get home at a decent hour. It was glorious. Doing the tourist thing on the Spit: eating at quaint little cafes and food trucks; shop hopping little boutiques and charter shops; and one cannot forget a pitstop at The Salty Dawg.

Fishcamp was different this year. The emergency orders restricting our fishing between 11:00 am and 5:00 pm essentially gave us about 5 days of actual fishing, for at least 20 mins. We had nets in the water whenever we legally could and we caught 1/3 of the number of fish we normally do. That’s not going to last the year but at least we didn’t come home empty handed. Our household allowance is 75 fish, we came home with 29. Just means we need more halibut. 😎 In total we caught 125 fish, split between 6 permits.
Good food and drink is always a part of our adventures.

I processed three cases of salmon in the beach. Came home and put 8 fish in the freezer for later processing and smoked 6. I tried a new brine, just salt and pickling spice. Smoked for about 6 hours. We’ll see how we like it. Then we’ll do more later.
Even with all the differences and split camps and odd vibes, it was nice to spend time with my peeps. The beach was not as crowded, no rowdy dudes to contend with, few beach racers and poorly behaved people made for a more peaceful beach time.
We also learned new things (Thing 1 got to observe a commercial setnet operation with Mrs Jane and learned about assembling a new net), met new people and had new experiences! Always good things. And we day dreamed of what we could do if this happens again…. Go hiking, camping, fishing, etc somewhere else. It would be more affordable probably!

Even Sourdoughs need a break periodically! We’ve been logging the hours and working hard on our current job: finishing soffits and siding a two story house just so we could take this long weekend.
We took the liberty to spend it at the cabin with the two littles. The big kids stayed home for various reasons, mostly to care for those lil ducks of ours. The kids are in bed and I’m up enjoying some quiet time to myself.
Sometimes the best things in life are the simple pleasures. The sound of silence. No city noises. Only the occasional overhead flight. The wind gently rustling through the birch leaves. Bird song. Once in a while you can hear the sound of a twig snap in the brush, some covert creature making their way around the cabin. It’s so peaceful.
Now imagine living this way every day. Heaven on earth
