I’m working our booth at the KPBA Home Show. It’s our annual chance to mingle with the general public and show off our handiwork.
Our best way to see what’s available in the area for home improvement! It’s a favorite for kids since all the vendors have 🍬🍭 candy giveaways. Lots of fun for everyone.

We’ve been working on a custom rec cabin down by Ninilchik off and on for two years. It belongs to our boss Jake and we work on it when there no other more pressing contracts.
It’s an open floor plan with a central vaulted ceiling. This light will be the centerpiece for the cabin.
It’s is of course meant to offer light but it’s mostly a decorative piece to bring that level of rustic Alaskana to modern times.
I used a piece of local Alaska White Spruce that we milled. I distressed it and sealed the 4×6. Then I repurposed a belt for two decorative straps and added some natural fiber rope to finish the straps.

It’s hung by 4 eye lags capable of supporting over 100 lbs.
The lights are string Edison lights fixed by staples around the moose horns. Jake supplied the horns. I used my Makita cut off tool to cut the horns from the skull. I drill two holes in each paddle to attach them to the beam.

I lengthened the cord with a swag light kit to allow it to plug into the switch controlled ceiling outlet.

I can’t wait to install it at the cabin. I’ll update with a picture once it’s installed.
A late season build, a timber frame carport. Got as far as the rafters set before the snow put a halt to the roof going on. Waiting for a dry clear day to finish it off.
12′ x 21′ carport.

Setting the piers in place

Now for the beams… Too heavy
Bring the mini in to set the beams
Rafters almost done.
King posts and cross supports.
Rafter cap up. One more side to go.

Warm gear is essential when building outside in the winter. Some days even double layers beneath your insulated outerwear is essential. Without the insulated gear life is utterly miserable and those work days drag on.
My old Carhartts have seen better days. I’ve been wearing them for five years now I think. They were gifted to me by my friends Sam & Vanessa. They were a real blessing at the time and I’ve been grateful for their warmth.
I’ve patched them and tried to keep them serviceable for a couple of winters now. But the time has come that they need to be retired. These can become spares for the cabin.

I’ve been looking for a good used pair at the thrift stores for some time now to no avail. Even then a pair will be about $40 used. Heavens knows I don’t want to pay Freddy’s price of $200 for a pair! Today when we went for lunch at the local hardware store… Yes, you read that right… They were having a storewide sale and low and behold their insulated gear was included. And they had women’s wear and not just men’s!!
So for a little more than twice thrift price I have a brand new pair of insulated bibs, (that fit right & are long enough) to keep me toasty while working in the snow. I’m so excited! Lots of pockets & a hammer loop too! Woo hoo!

Plus we had a great grilled panini and homemade soup at the Old Goat Cafe.
Triple blessed.

So we got to the job site Monday morning to clean up and get the orders to do window & corner trim. So back to the mill for some trim boards and off to work we go again.

Gotta admit it looks better with a little trim.

Now that we’re really done… I hope… It’s off to moose hunting camp.
