Once in a Blue Moon

Spent the weekend at the cabin. Went out with the idea of working on the deck posts but the frozen timbers were adverse to the idea. So we puttered around doing other things and relaxed a bit.

Dean pulled the leaning support post out from under the sun room and put in a temporary post until next spring. The old log post Dad installed had just rotted off and was skidding off its base.

The moon was so bright Friday night the kids thought it was full! Didn’t need a flashlight to go to the outhouse at night.

Saturday night’s full moon did not disappoint. We sat around the fire and watched the moon rise through the spruce trees.

The kids we’re catching up on LHotP episodes inside while Dean and I enjoyed the fire.

We had a wind advisory for Sunday and it started blowing early. Little Mister got a fright with a tree top breaking off and falling on the neighboring lot.

On our drive out there was a tree down across the road. So we made quick use of the chainsaw and cleared the road.

Pumpkin parfait
Snickers salad

It’s Sukkot and that means lots of gathering together to eat all those special things we don’t normally eat. Like these two dishes.

I loosely based my pumpkin parfait on this recipe. I substituted granola for the Graham crackers and dark Mexican style caramel sauce for the Torani’s. It was a smashing success and no leftovers.

For the Snickers salad I used this recipe. I know, I know, you can’t believe I made a dish with candy bars in it. What can I say, Alaska changes you. I portioned this one out so everyone got a little, so we actually had a bit of leftovers. I hid them in the fridge so the kids don’t know.

Tonight we’re having a Mexican themed taco night. I’m off the hook for dessert but I’m making a few savoury dishes like halibut mango ceviche and cilantro lime slaw.

Snow??

It’s mid-October and we’ve seen the trees transition from bright green foliage to gold, to no foliage in a matter of a few weeks. The wind has kicked up and it can really blow here. The average temp range for October looks like highs in the lower 40s to upper 20s for lows, with an average snowfall date of Oct 17th. This past week we’ve been experiencing unseasonably warm weather, highs in the 50s and lows in the 40s.  It has been great weather for working outdoors at least.

Last year Anchorage had its first official snowfall on Sept. 29, 2012. Parts of the greater  Anchorage  area did have snow a couple of weeks ago but not on the “official” NOAA measuring site, so no “official” snow fall yet this year. And we haven’t even seen a snowflake fall down here yet.  And it’s not looking like we’ll see any in the next few days either.

Although, one can see fresh snow on all the peaks round about us. They are bright and pristine white with their new winter coats on. That is, one can see them when the skies are clear, not too many of those days here lately.

Our forecast is calling for warmer temps and rain, only a slight chance of snow mixed with rain showers later in the week. Not so fun for people waiting for their first Alaska snow! 😉 You know, the ones with the snow boots and warm gloves and   waiting to play in the snow…
