I made it through Sabbath and oneg without too much trouble. Thankfully there weren’t too many temptations!

I’m looking forward to eating fruit again, of course I have to wait a little longer. I found this recipe for citrus & avocado salad that looks scrumptious. It’s on the menu for Monday! I’ll just omit the sugar in the dressing. It will be sweet enough with the oranges & grapefruit.

Did you know that Little Phoebe means the cardinal number 5? I was today days old when I learned that. πŸ€“

I’m five days in y’all and I really just want a cookie and a glass of wine.

I’ll have butter chicken & iced tea for dinner instead.

I haven’t noticed any real changes, other than the aforementioned desire.

And me. It’s definitely with me. Four days.

Yesterday wasn’t terrible but I am feeling it. I’m preoccupied with food. I want to eat all the things. And the thought just occured to me that I should get back to taking my supplements. I’ve fallen off the wagon over the holiday season.

I may have had a little too much dinner.

Besides being one of my Favorite Bands, I’m starting to feel the sugar cravings. Sweet breakfast items .. yogurt… Pudding… All things that I looked twice at this morning.

But I resisted temptation.

I made it through the afternoon. Then I got really tired. Oy. Had to take a nap

Besides having insomnia last night

I was tired but for some reason sleep would not come easy. Oy. (I actually started this post at 1:50 am.) So automatically I know today is going to be harder since I’ll be sleep deprived.

But I made it.

Stopping for that post work soda and snack on the way home, I was good, I opted for water and beef jerky.

I’ll be ready for bedtime.

Not too bad. Lots of iced tea and nuts for snacks. We cut a load of firewood this afternoon so that kept me occupied. No real sugar cravings yet.

Today will be busy, to say the least. But I’ll take a moment to express my gratitude for those special people in my life. There are many, many people I could name but for brevity’s sake I’ll keep it to two groups!

My kids top the list of course. We have our challenges but each of them brings their own special something to our home. Their creativity, their wit, their uniqueness. I love them so.

Then there’s my bestest friends, my solstice sisters. They make everything right when we’re together. I can’t thank them enough for all the things.

There are others of course, many, which I hold dear. Today will be spent focusing on these blessings and the other 29 days worth of posts that bring joy and meaning to my life.

Happy Thanksgiving!

This number is one I share with my mom. It’s our special day. Although it’s not today, I’ll go ahead and post about it early, since I’ll be done with my 30 days of Thankfulness series before it arrives!

Around the fire pit with the fam. March 2019

She lives 3,825 miles away from me, give or take a few. Which means we don’t get to see each other frequently. So when we do get to see each other it’s a special event. We haven’t been together for our special day since 2012, the last one before I moved to Alaska.

Red beans & rice. One of the home cooked meals we had.

Last time I saw her was in 2019. We went for a family visit, both mine and Dean’s. Which took us from sea to shining sea. Little mister got to play in the Atlantic Ocean.

That same year I made a solo trip back in August, since Rickerd (my stepdad) was ill. I stayed at her house and it was just me and her for most of the time. My siblings came for visits of various lengths but mostly me and her, her dogs and the spiders.

Roscoe & Lilly

Brown Recluse Spiders had taken up residency in the spare room. I used DE like a priest uses holy water, it was everywhere, to keep those little demons away.

Mom had been keeping Rickerd company in his long hospital stay and was just in need of a respite, and some help with housework.

She had a crazy accident the morning I arrived, so thankful that she nor my sister Mert we’re harmed as a result. It really messed up her vehicle tho.

Where her vehicle left the road.

Consequently we were able to spend a lot of time together. πŸ’—

I’m forever grateful that my Rickerd recovered and we still have his unparalleled wit and wisdom to illuminate our lives. I’m so very thankful to have been able to spend this time with my Mama. Grateful to my brother for fixing her vehicle. And blessed that we share a special day.

P.S. update on Bergie, the Bergster, old man cat. He’s been doing well enough. Eating a little more now, still hates taking his meds. He’s strong enough to fight like the Dickens not to swallow his pill. Lol He rests most of the day, but usually picks a human to be near. He occasionally hides to be alone.

I’m being lazy, not wanting to get out of my comfy bed. It’s nice and warm. I have a snuggly little boy who likes to climb into bed in the morning after his Dad gets up. And a spoiled puppy dog who snores, both cuddled up here with me. Moments like these are meant to be cherished as they won’t last forever. I’m very thankful for all of these blessings.

Spending time with Niki during her visit in September we talked of many things but one very important concept was living a life of gratitude. Not just simply being thankful, which in and of itself is a good thing, but acknowledging others, being kind and realizing how much we have to be thankful for. Meditating on it.

As the years pass, I am coming more and more to understand that it is the common, everyday blessings of our common everyday lives for which we should be particularly grateful. They are the things that fill our lives with comfort and our hearts with gladness — just the pure air to breathe and the strength to breath it; just warmth and shelter and home folks; just plain food that gives us strength; the bright sunshine on a cold day; and a cool breeze when the day is warm.

Laura Ingalls Wilder

When we live a life of gratitude it changes things. It changes how you think and act, even how your brain is wired, how you view the world, and how others view you (that’s not the goal but a side effect of sorts).

An important aspect of gratitude is expressing it. Telling others that you appreciate them and why, otherwise they may never know. Don’t let your moment of gratitude expression be at their memorial service. Tell them now.

Won’t you join me in practicing gratitude and post something every day for the next 30 Days? Begin the habit, if you’re not already, of expressing thankfulness in your own life.
