Today is my Grandpa’s birthday. I was always excited to celebrate with him. It meant there would be chocolate cake with pecans and black walnut ice cream or, if Grandma was being especially nice, raisin pecan pie. It was his favorite. I’m pretty sure he’s the reason I love pecans so much.

CEW, 1997

Grandpa’s birthday also meant that Thanksgiving was coming as well as another couple birthdays… It was party time!

Now, back to the raisin pecan pie.

It wasn’t like a pecan pie (my favorite pie) with raisins. No, it was like a funeral pie with pecans. I remember watching Grandma boil the raisins to plump them up. Prepare a double pie crust. Assembling and baking it in her cool old electric range with double upper ovens and a cook top that retracted when not in use.

Grandpa sure loved that pie. I haven’t made one in ages. Actually I’ve only ever made it once IIRC. It’s a lot of work and we’ll, if you’re not a raisin lover, I mean really love raisins, it’s gonna take a while to eat that whole pie by yourself. I don’t have Grandma’s recipe anymore, but here’s a close approximation. Just add a whole bunch of chopped (or halved) pecans.

So I’ll not be making his favorite pie today. Just reminiscing about The Old Codger and being thankful for having experienced life with him.

Rest peacefully Nicky Baby.

Even Sourdoughs have family it seems. And I’ve got a house and heart full of them right now. My Seester and BIL and their boys are here. Plus this entire weekend has been a non-stop whirlwind of birthday boy Thing 2, Home Free Concert Saturday night and another birthday boy Lil Mister today.

It’s November!! Woo hoo. Winter is definitely here, a dusting of snow to welcome November’s arrival. It’s day one of my birth month. Gifts and adoration accepted daily, of course.

November also brings some of my favorite things. Pumpkin pies and cornbread dressing. Birthday cakes and ice cream. My Mom’s birthday too. And her anniversary, in no particular order. A surprise visit from my Seester!!! As well as an early Hanukkah. It will be a busy week starting with Thanksgiving, then birthdays and rolling right into the feast of dedication.

November is a huge birthday month in our realm. There’s the twins, Thing 1’s boyfriend’s birthday, MaKayla, Me & Mom’s and a few other friends and memorial days thrown in there.

Grandpa’s was the 21st and my dear friend Katherine’s was the 28th, both of blessed memory.

I like to think of November as a month of feel-good, like a warm sweater, sitting around a bonfire with a hot cocoa and all your loved ones kinda feel good.

I hope your November is just as good. 💖

August 31, 1951 a little boy was born in Michigan. Today would have been his 70th birthday. Blessed memory.

I can’t say party without singing Beastie Boys in my head….You’ve got to fight … for your right…. to par-tay.

So we fought and we partied. Kid style. With balloons and things.

Dean grilled up some mean honey mustard chicken.

Manning the grill.

Our boys had their friends over and they got some pretty cool gifts.

But most of all we just enjoyed having friends over and catching up. It’s been a while since we’ve seen some of our friends.

There’s will be many nerf wars in our near future.

And plenty of game playing fun.

The best of times.

And you’ll notice Lol Mister is sporting a new hair cut. He had his first barber shop visit on his birthday. He was tired of mom haircuts. 😲

Since I took a posting sabbatical for most of 2018-2019, I thought I’d dedicate a couple posts to catch y’all up.

Big Girl’s Birthday

Thing 1 had her birthday earlier this month. For a special treat we went out to eat and she got to pick the location. And she got some super fun stuff for her birthday: a fashion design set and a portable CD player (with download capabilities…). Her Dad sent her a $20 gift card and she was able to pick up a new outfit (a bright pink and white striped dress with leggings), a new pair of flip-flops, a matching bow, socks, colored pencils, a sketch pad and a new purple water bottle. She is quite the shopper! She also got to pick out some really cool sticker play-sets that the babysitter got her. What fun!

Here’s the Big Girl doing some of her fashion design….

Yesterday she got a surprise package from Grammy & Papa will lots of fun hair things and girly stuff which made her day. She’s been feeling a bit forgotten on her birthday this year so she’s finding out that sometimes good things come to those who wait!

Here’s one of her fashion designs:

Little Bit’s Birthday

We spent several hours roaming about the Kenai River Festival for something special for her birthday. She had a blast making all sorts of crafts.

Here’s her salmon that she painted. Aunt Claire will love the hot pink color that she picked out!

She’s also wearing her new outfit she picked out and the matching hair bows and glittery flip-flops she purchased with her $20 gift card from her Dad along with a Hello Kitty coloring book and crayons. She’s a pretty good little bargain hunter too!

She managed to get some pretty cool birthday presents a junior fashion designer set (so she can be just like big sis!) and some new Hello Kitty socks. She also got a Hello Kitty Lego set from the babysitter! What a score!

Plus yesterday she got a surprise package from Grammy & Papa with all sorts of fun little girl things in it for her birthday. She was thrilled!
