If this doesn’t conjure Christmas past I don’t even think Ebeneezer Scrooge’s ghosts would do it for ya!

Ribbon candy in a crystal dish

I was minding my old business at the IGA recently,  grabbing some groceries and me eyes spied this on the shelf and instantly was transported back in time with my Auntie. Certain things bring her to mind: making sugar cookie cutouts, ladies hankies, double mint gum, fishing or gardening in overalls, avon perfume, hair bonnets to sleep in, aprons, the smell of an old house (old wood especially) and creaking wood floors, the tick-tock of an old schoolhouse clock, playing Yahtzee, ribbon candies at Christmas and last but not least, home canned tomatoes.

She usually kept a dish of ribbon candies on the console TV during the holiday season. Sometimes they were left in the tin they came in. It was a special treat and of course we kids were always looking for the largest piece to cram into our mouths.

Our custom was to go to her house for Christmas eve. We had finger foods, little smokies in homemade sauce (which was grape jelly and chili sauce), chips and dip, I’m sure there were veggies and crackers and all the usual things. Mostly I remember the little smokies and getting presents.

Her name Arta Olive, Great grandma & grandpa had a knack for unusual names! She never had children of her own but she affected many generations with her presence. I have many things to be grateful for that she provided: she taught me my love for home grown and canned goodies, crochet, caring for elders, staying connected with far away family, and my quest for biblical knowledge. Here I am, decades later, trying to instill those same things into my own children. Thank you Auntie. 🩷

Her memory is a blessing.

That's it for another holiday season. Wishing you peace in the New Year!

Happy Purim!

Today was supposed to be pre-cooking prep and working on kitchen organization. Instead we spent the day rearranging, cleaning and decorating the living room. We made a dent.

Lil Bit did get the cornbread made. Lil Mister was working on prepping his pumpkin, but he gave up so Lil Bit took charge. Thing 1 is working on pie crusts tonight. The rest will be done tomorrow.

Festive window.

Lil Bit was very helpful today. She stayed with me all afternoon and we got it done. So thankful for a helpful child.

It’s November!! Woo hoo. Winter is definitely here, a dusting of snow to welcome November’s arrival. It’s day one of my birth month. Gifts and adoration accepted daily, of course.

November also brings some of my favorite things. Pumpkin pies and cornbread dressing. Birthday cakes and ice cream. My Mom’s birthday too. And her anniversary, in no particular order. A surprise visit from my Seester!!! As well as an early Hanukkah. It will be a busy week starting with Thanksgiving, then birthdays and rolling right into the feast of dedication.

November is a huge birthday month in our realm. There’s the twins, Thing 1’s boyfriend’s birthday, MaKayla, Me & Mom’s and a few other friends and memorial days thrown in there.

Grandpa’s was the 21st and my dear friend Katherine’s was the 28th, both of blessed memory.

I like to think of November as a month of feel-good, like a warm sweater, sitting around a bonfire with a hot cocoa and all your loved ones kinda feel good.

I hope your November is just as good. 💖

Our Valentine’s Day was sweet. Dean went all out with flowers, steak dinner, cheesecake and chocolate covered strawberries for dessert. And a box of chocolates of course.

Green orchids. So lovely in full bloom.

Orchids surprisingly do quite well here. My Mother’s Day orchid from a few years ago is still happy in my downstairs bathroom window. I do enjoy them so.

With a little jazz and speakeasy flair we welcomed the new year alaskan style, of course.

Fireworks at midnight.

Hopefully 2021 has better things in store for us than last year.
